Notifications.

How do users get notified about new messages?

FieldChat will notify users about new messages in several different ways:

  1. Text (also called SMS) message notifications with the body of the text message, and any links or pictures.
  2. App notifications
  3. Desktop notifications
  4. Unread message indicators
  5. Audible chime

How do users get notified about activity logs they need to submit?

FieldChat will also send reminder notifications to users about any activity logs that they need to submit:

  1. Text (also called SMS) message notifications with a link to the the activity log webform that they need to submit
  2. App notifications, which will launch the FieldChat app and the activity log webform that they need to submit

User notification settings

When a user is added to a channel, the notification settings in their user profile determine what type of notifications they receive in the channel.

Notify user about new messages:

  • Text notifications - use text (SMS) notifications
  • App notifications - use app notifications on mobile devices and in the Chrome and Firefox browser app on your desktop

If the user is receiving text (SMS) notifications, you can also set whether they get the name of the project and channel in every message.

As well, the notification settings in their user profile will determine whether the user will receive reminders about activity logs they need to submit as a text message or as an app notification.

Channel notification settings

Once a user is added to a channel, they can customize the notifications they receive for that channel by editing their notification settings. You can change your settings to receive text or app notifications for every message, only when @mentioned, or never.

You can view a user's current notification settings in the Member list. A text bubble icon beside their name indicates text notifications. A smartphone icon beside their name indicates app notifications.

You can edit a user's channel notification settings by clicking on the text bubble or phone icon, which will open a notification settings panel.

Activity Log reminder notification settings

Users can disable and enable their reminder notification settings using the on/off slider switch at the top of their activity log. The changes will be immediately applied - they do not need to submit the rest of the form.

Text message notifications

Texting users get a text message for new message notifications. In a group chat channel, they will get a text message for every new message, except for messages with @user mentions where they are not mentioned.

Texting users can respond to messages they are notified in and @user others they'd like to notify.

Users can also get the name of the channel and project in every text message they receive, based on their user notification settings.

Mobile App notifications

Users who have installed the mobile app can receive app notifications. After they login to the app for the first time, they will receive app notifications if they have allowed notifications for the FieldChat app on their phone.

Customizing iOS app notifications

iOS notifications will be sent on your phone based on your notification settings in each channel. To further customize how they appear and sound on your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings -> Notifications -> FieldChat. You can customize your notification sound and appearance settings, as shown below.

Customizing Android app notifications

Android notifications will be sent on your phone based on your notification settings in each channel. To further customize how they appear and sound your Android device, go to Settings -> Apps & Notifications -> FieldChat. You can customize your notification sound and appearance settings, as shown below.

Desktop notifications

If you are running FieldChat in Chrome or Firefox browser on your desktop, you will get notifications from your browser for every new message if app notifications are enabled in your channel notification settings (see section above).

Here's what a desktop notification looks like:

When you first start using FieldChat on your desktop, you will receive a prompt to enable desktop notifications, as shown below:

When you click on "Enable desktop notifications", your browser will prompt you for permission, as shown below. If you accidentally choose Block, you will need to manually re-enable notifications in your browser for the website app.field.chat. Instructions for Chrome are here and Firefox are here

Unread message counts

Every channel and project with an unread message for you will show a count inside a red circle. Once you visit a channel by clicking on it, the unread message count will clear.

On the desktop browser, you will also see an unread message count in your browser tab.

Audible chime

On the mobile app, you will hear an audible chime when the app is in the foreground and a new notification arrives. When the app is in the background, your phone's notification settings determine whether there is a sound when a new notification arrives. The mobile app will also make a sound every time you send a message.

On the web app, you will hear an audible chime when a new notification arrives regardless of whether it is in the foreground or background. 

You can disable the audible chime in both the mobile and web app by going to "My Settings" in the top left hamburger menu and selecting "Mute all sounds in the app".
